The 2012 Mazda models are just starting to arrive in the showroom at Schaumburg Mazda in Schaumburg, IL, but Mazda has just begun to release details about their 2013 models - most of them still only concept form!
The 2013 MAZDA CX-5 is a small crossover that should line up between the MAZDA3 and MAZDA CX-7. It won't be production ready until next year, but Mazda has no reservations about releasing choice details for auto critics and Mazda fans alike.
Mazda expects this new concept to become the brand's second best seller with projections of 58,000 units sold in the US alone. But, how? According to Jim O'Sullivan, President of Mazda North America, "The biggest outflow from the C-car segment (Mazda 3) is into the small crossover segment. The CX-7 is for some people a little too big of a stretch. The CX-5 will not be a niche player."1
The CX-5 is expected to deliver 162-hp at 6,000-rpm and 155 pound-feet of torque at 4,000-rpm. The power plant under the hood will be a Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter, inline four-cylinder direct-injection engine.
As far as fuel-economy, Mazda promises best-in-class, estimating around 28 mpg city, 38 mpg highway. European and Canadian drivers can even expect a diesel variant.
